How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Central Ohio?
Stump grinding pricing comes down to diameter, depth, and access. Here's exactly what we measure and why we won't quote sight-unseen — too many surprises hide under the soil line.
Every stump is priced individually. We give written quotes in 24-48 hours after measuring the diameter at ground level and checking access. Depth, debris haul, and root work are quoted as separate line items.
What drives the price of a stump grind
Six factors do most of the work. Diameter and access are usually the biggest movers — a small stump in an easy spot prices very differently from the same diameter behind a tight gate.
Stump diameter
Measured across the widest point at ground level (not the trunk above). A big shade tree stump can flare significantly at the soil line. Diameter is the single biggest factor in the price — a 12-inch stump grinds in minutes, a 30-inch stump can take half a day.
Depth below grade
Most homeowners want 6-8 inches below grade so they can replant grass or lay sod. Deeper grinds (12+ inches) for re-planting trees in the same hole take longer and put more wear on the machine. Shallow grinds (3-4 inches) are cheaper but the stump can push back over time.
Root collar size
The roots that flare out from the base of the trunk add ground time. A small ornamental stump usually has minimal root collar; a mature shade tree often has roots running 4-6 feet out that customers want ground down too. That's a separate quote line if you want the surface roots gone.
Access to the property
Gate width, fence layout, and slope all decide which grinder we can use. A 36-inch gate fits our self-propelled grinder; a narrower gate forces us to handheld work. Steep back yards limit machine angles. Easy front-yard access is fastest and cheapest.
Debris haul vs leave on site
Default is to leave the chips in the hole — they make decent mulch for the spot or pile easily for the homeowner. Hauling the grindings off completely (shovel into the truck, dispose properly) is a separate line item. Most jobs leave them.
Multiple stumps
Per-stump pricing improves when there are several to do at once. Setup time, hauling the grinder in, and the property walk all amortize across the count. A back yard with five stumps is meaningfully cheaper per stump than a single ornamental in isolation.
Examples by job type
No dollar figures — every stump is different. Here's how the work complexity stacks up across common Central Ohio jobs.
Single ornamental stump in a front yard
Small diameter (6-8 inches at the base), easy driveway access, 6-inch depth below grade. Quick visit — under an hour on the grinder including setup and cleanup.
Single mature shade tree stump
Big diameter (20+ inches at the flare), surface roots running out a couple feet, 8-inch depth below grade. Longer grind time, more wear on teeth. Often the highest single-stump price we quote because of the size.
Multiple stumps from a tree removal
Several stumps left from a tree-service company that didn't include grinding. Front-yard access, similar diameters. Priced per-stump but at a better rate than a one-off because we're already on site with the grinder.
Back-yard stump with tight gate access
Medium diameter stump in a fenced back yard, 30-inch gate, mild slope. Forces handheld grinder work — slower, more labor, higher per-stump cost than the same job in a front yard with truck access.
Why we don't post a per-inch price
Per-inch pricing is the industry shorthand, and it's not wrong — it's just incomplete. It doesn't account for access, depth, root collar, or what's buried in the stump. A flat per-inch rate forces the price up to cover worst case, so easy jobs subsidize hard ones.
Coming out to measure and check the access takes us about 10 minutes (or a couple of clear photos if you send them in advance). The written quote covers the grind, the depth, and any debris work. You see exactly what each piece costs and pick what gets done.
Tim writes every stump quote himself. Over 10 years of experience of local stump work means the estimate matches the actual job — and the "what if we hit metal" plan is on the page before we ever start.
What's included on every grind
- Stump measurement and quote walkthrough before we start
- Locate of utility marks (we wait for 811 if needed — that's on us to verify)
- Grind to 6-8 inches below grade (deeper available, quoted separately)
- Chips left in the hole for natural backfill
- Visible chips on the surrounding lawn raked off
- Photo-documented before-and-after on request
What costs extra
- Surface root removal beyond the immediate stump
- Deep grinding (12+ inches) for re-planting trees in the same spot
- Hauling all chips off the property
- Backfilling with topsoil and reseeding the spot (or laying sod patch)
- Tooth replacement when metal or large rocks are found in the stump
- Handheld grinder work when gate access blocks the wheeled grinder
Anything in the "extra" column is called out and priced ahead of time — never a surprise on the invoice.

Stump grinding cost FAQs
How is stump diameter measured? +
Across the widest point at ground level — not the trunk above. A stump that looks like it's 18 inches across the trunk might flare to 28 inches at the soil line, and that's the number that matters. We measure with a tape on the actual stump before quoting.
How deep below grade can you grind? +
Our standard depth is 6-8 inches below grade — deep enough to replant grass or lay sod over the spot. We can go deeper (12+ inches) if you're planning to plant a new tree in the same hole, but that's a heavier grind and gets priced accordingly. Going shallow (3-4 inches) is cheaper but you'll see the stump push back up over time.
Do you haul away the grindings? +
Default is to leave them on site in the hole — the chips make great mulch for the spot once it's filled with soil and reseeded. If you want them hauled off completely, that's a separate line item: we shovel them into the truck and dispose of them. Most homeowners leave them.
Can you grind stumps in a fenced back yard? +
Depends on the gate width and the slope. Our smaller self-propelled grinder fits through a 36-inch gate. A 30-inch gate or steep slope on the back yard limits us to handheld work, which is much slower and gets priced higher. Send a photo of the gate when you request a quote and we can tell you up front.
What if the stump has rocks or metal in it? +
Old yard fences sometimes get grown into trees. Rocks under the stump from old landscaping happen too. Hitting either ruins teeth on the grinder, which is real money. If we hit metal or large rocks during the grind, we stop and let you decide — finish on a different angle, leave the stump shorter, or accept the extra cost for tooth replacement. We don't hide it.
